We are a training and organisational development consultancy providing programmes based on a whole person approach.

About Us

We provide training and development programmes mainly, but not exclusively, in Mental Health, including social inclusion, work with older people with mental health problems, spirituality and values and ethics based practice. We also provide training on the new Mental Capacity Act and provide training and organisational development for third sector and public sector organisations.

Why Telos?

Our name ‘Telos’ is derived from the Greek word for ‘fulfilment’, or ‘accomplishment’. As an aim for all our work with service users, the term ‘Telos’ underpins our mission to provide training and development based on our core values of a person-centered approach which enables service users to lead as full a life as possible while respecting their values and spiritual needs.

Ben Bano

Telos Training is led by Ben Bano. Ben was Director of Social Care and Older Peoples Services with the East Kent NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust until he retired in October 2005. Since then he has been involved in training and development as well as management consultancy. Ben has also been involved in teaching Approved Social Worker trainees as well as acting as a course tutor for an ASW teaching programme. Ben is also an experienced NVQ assessor and verifier. Ben is also a local Councillor with extensive experience in the public sector. Where required Telos uses experienced associate trainers from a variety of care and teaching backgrounds in order to ensure full coverage of our client’s needs.

Our Values

The core values of Telos underpin all its training and development programmes. Some of our most important values gained from our experience include:

  • Equal Opportunities and Diversity: Telos recognises that skills are often developed in multi-cultural care environments and that our training and development programmes need to represent these aspects of care practice.
  • A person–centered approach: In a care environment increasingly influenced by the need for a strong values and ethical base our courses offer participants adequate opportunities to cover issues such as the values and ethical base of care practice as well as tools and techniques in developing practice based on a person-centered approach.
  • Spiritual dimension to care practice: Spirituality and the way in which spiritual needs are met and addressed form an increasingly important focus in care practice. Where required our programmes will incorporate a focus on spirituality issues either as part of the ‘core’ programme or as a ‘stand-alone’ programme.

Adding Value to training and development

Some of the ways in which Telos Training add value to your training programmes include:

  • Learning Together: Our programmes reflect the reality of partnership working in a complex environment. Social Workers, Care Managers, Nurses, Medical Staff as well as other professionals work much more effectively together when they have been involved in a learning programme together. We particularly value the involvement of learners from Private and Voluntary (Third Sector) care settings.
  • Working across the Health and Social Care workforce: Support Workers and similar staff have a key role in play in working alongside professional colleagues and in enhancing standards of care. Telos will focus on providing values-based training for groups such as Support, Time and Recovery Workers through using accessible and readily understandable learning materials.
  • Tools and Techniques: Each of our sessions covers a practical ‘kitbag’ of tools and techniques on the particular subject developed both from the programme itself as well as from the direct experience of participants themselves.

Some recently commissioned programmes

Telos seeks to respond to the requirements of Health and Social Care commissioners as new training needs emerge. Here are some examples of recently commissioned programmes:

  • 'Making it all worthwhile':
Our newly developed programme, commissioned by Kent County Council, 'Making it all worthwhile' focusses on helping professional staff in Health and Social Care who are experienced but stressed by a demanding job to return to and refocus on their professional roots. This programme contributes to your staff care programme and assists in managing the stress caused by constantly increasing and changing demands.
  • Caring about Carers:
Staff are often required to carry out Carers Assessments with little preparation or training in working with carers. . Using a person-centered approach, this workshop enables staff to focus on the often complex and conflicting feelings of carers and provides an opportunity to learn about and discuss good practice in this area.

Organisational Development for smaller organisations

Over the last year Telos has expanded to providing support in organisational development, such as development of strategic objectives, for smaller organisations such as an Almshouse Charity and a Town Council in Kent. New for 2008 - promoting self-directed support

Self directed support is increasingly underpinning the commissioning and delivery of social care services. Telos is developing programmes to bring about awareness of national policy initiatives, for example 'Putting People First' and to bring about the culture changes required to ensure a focus on working with clients and carers to deliver self-directed support.
